Pallavas

The political career of Pallavas started as the feudatories of the Satavahanas. After the downfall of Satavahana Empire Pallavas established independent kingdom. Simhavishnu was the founder of Pallava dynasty. He defeated Kalabhras, Pandyas and Cholas. He had the title of "Avanisimha" due to his victories. Simhavishnu was succeeded by his son Mahendravarma I. Mahendravarma I ruled from 600 to 630 A.D. He was first a Jain and later he became a Saivite. Mahendravarma I wrote Mattavilasa Prahasana in sanskrit language. He had the titles of Mattavilasa, Gunabhara, Chitrakarapuli and Vichitrachitta. He built cave temple in Tamil Nadu. During his reign Pulakesi II, the Badami Chalukya ruler occupied Coastal Andhra from Pallavas. Mahendravarma I was defeated and killed by Pulakesi II in the Pullalur War.

Mahendravarma I was succeeded by his son Narasimhavarma I. Narasimhavarma I ruled from 630 to 660 A.D. He defeated and killed Pulakesi II, the Badami Chalukya ruler, in the battle of Manimangalam and burnt the capital city Badami(Vatapi) into ashes. He also defeated cholas and Pandyas. Narasimhavarma I restored Manavarma, the Singhalese refugee in his court on the throne of Ceylon. He had the title of "Mahamalla". He built a port town called Mamallapuram(Mahabalipuram). He built Pagodas(small temples) called Pancha Pandava Rathas in Mahabalipuram. The Chinese pilgrim Hieun-Tsang visited the court of Narasimhavarma I in 642 A.D. The poet Bharavi lived in the court of Narasimhavarma I.

During the reign of Nandivarman II the capital city of Kanchi was captured by Vikramaditya II, the Badami Chalukya ruler. Nandivarma built Vaikunta Perumal and Mukteswara temple at Kanchipuram. Aparajitha Varma was the last ruler of Pallavas. He was defeated and killed by the Chola ruler Aditya I. With this Pallava rule came to end in the south. Pallava territories were occupied by the Aditya I.
